Engine Lubrication System | How Lubrication System Works in engine
Automobile is a fast moving mechanical system. there is relative movement between the component of the parts Due to Which Friction Force act Between them thus heat energy is produced between the two meeting surface wear and tear would take place. thus there is always loss of energy and also there life decrease to over came there problem lubrication is very essential Lubrication is most important maintenance operation of any mechanical system
Necessity of Lubrication
Lubrication is very necessary for satisfactory motor vehicle performance it not only provide minimum wear and tear but also low friction loss Proper lubrication minimize wear and tear of Components it minimizes the loss of power it absorb the shock between bearing and componentLubricant From Seal Between and liner Lubrication act as cleaning agent it prevent the Sizing of Vehicle It increases the longevity of the automobile It reduces the maintenance operation operation the vehicle IT reduces Noise IT absorb Heat Energy Developed Between meeting Surface
LUBRICATION:-
Maintenances
- Preventive Maintenance
- Break Down Maintenance
Type of Lubricants:- Maintenance operations can be broadly categorized into Preventive Maintenance and Break Down Maintenance. Lubricants come in three forms: fluid, semi-fluid, and solid. Fluid oil, widely used in automobiles, caters to various engine and vehicle parts. Semi-solid lubricants find applications in heavy-duty work and chassis, while solid lubricants, like graphite and mica, are utilized for specific lubrication needs.
Lubricant:- It is difficult to get all disable feature of lubricant in one Substance so we must up two or more than two other substance to get all possible feature of lubricant
we prepare lubricant by two methods:-
Blending:- In this method use mix up some vegetable oil animal oil together with other material to get maximum possible desirable features is called blending
vegetable oil + Animaloil+ other properties improver materials
Compounding: in this method we mix- up mineral oil with vegetable oil or animal oil in required proportion to get desirable features of lubricant.
Additives ( it is properties improver) :- Lubricant should have following properties
- Anti Corrosiveness
- Anti oxidinsing
- Oilness
- Film strength
- Viscosity
- Good Stability
HOW ENGINE OIL WORKS.
Upon engine start-up, oil flows from the sump through the oil filter, then circulates through the crankshaft, reaching every part of the engine. This process prevents overheating and ensures efficient engine operation.
Splash Lubrication System:-
Popular in low-duty applications such as motorcycles and small cars, the splash lubrication system employs a cost-effective method. A cup-shaped dipper attached to the crankshaft splashes lubricating oil from the sump onto various engine parts.
SAE Coding System
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) employs a coding system to classify lubricants based on viscosity. SAE numbers like 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 50 indicate the lubricant’s suitability for different surfaces, with lower numbers used for lighter-duty applications.
FAQ
Q: What is an engine lubrication system?
A: The engine lubrication system is a vital component in vehicles that ensures the smooth operation of the engine by reducing friction between moving parts. It involves the distribution of lubricants to various engine components to prevent wear and tear, dissipate heat, and enhance overall performance.
Q: How many types of engine lubrication systems are there?
A: There are two main types of engine lubrication systems:
- Splash Lubrication System: Common in small vehicles, it employs a dipper attached to the crankshaft to splash lubricating oil onto engine parts.
- Pressure Lubrication System: Widely used in modern automobiles, it utilizes an oil pump to pressurize and direct lubricant to critical engine components.
Q: What is the function of engine lubrication?
A: The primary functions of engine lubrication include reducing friction between moving parts, preventing wear and tear, dissipating heat, cleaning engine components, absorbing shocks, and minimizing noise generated during operation.
Q: What is the lubricant used in engines?
A: Engines use various lubricants based on factors such as engine type, operating conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. Common types include fluid oils for light-duty work, semi-fluid lubricants for heavy-duty applications, and solid lubricants like graphite and mica for specific needs. The composition often involves blending oils or compounding mineral oils with vegetable or animal oils, along with additives to enhance specific properties.
